Ys Men & Women

Club Meetings
The Indianapolis Y's Men & Women meet every Wednesday at 12:00 PM at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 650 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, Indiana. A catered luncheon is served and each meeting features a speaker from the Indianapolis community.

Essay Contest
The Y's Men & Women annual essay contest started in 1975 and was the brainchild of the late Crowell Shelton, club member and Industrial Arts teacher within the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS). Each January, over 6,000 seventh and eighth grade IPS students are eligible to participate in the contest. The theme is selected by club members and IPS administrators.

Under the direction of Language Arts faculty, students submit an 125 words or less essay on the theme. A panel of judges reads and awards First through Fifth place for both seventh and eighth grade entries. The first place winner receives a $500 savings bond. All winners and their parents, teachers, and principals are honored at the annual Awards Luncheon held in mid-March.

Good Friday Breakfast
The annual Good Friday Breakfast originated in 1969 under the leadership of John Price and Mike Barth. Each year, it is customary to invite as speakers noted persons of the Indianapolis and State of Indiana communities. Such noted speakers have been Senator Richard Lugar and the 2006 keynote speaker, Judy O'Bannon, widow of the late Governor Frank O'Bannon.
